SALIKSIK/sa·lik·sík/ · to search every corner

Every research question starts as a single spark. In this class you'll learn to connect it, synapse by synapse, to evidence, to data, and finally to an answer you can defend.

Ang Salita · The word

A word older than the classroom

sa·lik·sík
  1. Noon to search every corner of a house
  2. Noon to untangle knotted hair
  3. Ngayon research, as in pananaliksik

Long before it meant research, saliksik meant something you did at home. Spanish-era Tagalog dictionaries describe it as searching every corner of a house, and as untangling knotted hair.

“Salicsiquin mong hanapin.”Look everywhere to find it. An example sentence from an old edition of the Vocabulario de la lengua tagala.

Your brain does the same thing when you research. It searches every corner of what it already knows, then builds new connections until a messy problem becomes a question you can actually answer.

The first Vocabulario de la lengua tagala was printed in 1613 in Pila, Laguna, right next door to Batangas.

How the marks work

Each character is a consonant with a built-in a. A mark above changes it to i/e; a mark below changes it to o/u. The cross-shaped mark cancels the vowel, so ᜃ (ka) becomes ᜃ᜔ (k).

That cross mark arrived in the Spanish era. Earlier writers usually left final consonants out, so they would have written ᜐᜎᜒᜐᜒ and trusted the reader to fill in the rest.

Ang Siklo · The cycle

The Saliksik Cycle

Five stages wired together like a neural circuit. You go around once in Phase 1 to build and defend a proposal, then again in Phase 2 to carry it out. Explore each stage on the brain below: click an area, or search for a stage.

Click a colored area of the brain, or drag to turn it.

Each stage lights up its own part of the brain to help you remember it. Real thinking uses the whole brain at once.

    ETIKA

Ethics isn't a stage you finish and leave behind. It runs through the whole cycle, from your first question to your final defense.

Phase 1 asks you to apply ethical standards in all stages of the research process and to cite your sources properly (Research Ethics · LC 9–10).

    • Humingi ng pahintulotGet informed consent before you collect data from anyone.
    • Ingatan ang privacyKeep participants' names and answers safe and confidential.

        Para sa aking mga mananaliksik

        Welcome to Saliksik.

This year you will not just read about research. You will do it, in our own community in Batangas. You will listen to the people who live with a problem, look for what others already know, build something that might help, test it honestly, and share what you found.

This site is your companion for the whole journey. Come back to it whenever you are lost, stuck, or curious. Every stop on the map has the next step waiting for you.

        Our research promises

        • Ask first. No interview or survey before IRB approval and signed consent.
        • Protect people. Use codes, not names. Keep consent forms in the team folder.
        • Credit every source. If you can't open the original, don't cite it.
        • Think for yourself. AI may help you brainstorm. It never writes your paper.
        • Report what happened. A failed trial is still data. Never invent results.
        • Give back. Share your findings with the community you studied.
